October Highlights: Boo at the Zoo & Having a Sustainable Halloween
October was full of energy, creativity, and community spirit for 8Trees Inc.! We were thrilled to take part in Boo at the Zoo at Safari Niagara on October 4th, 5th, 10th, and 11th, where families came out to enjoy a weekend of Halloween fun. The park was buzzing with excitement — we spotted plenty of Marios and Luigis, Power Rangers, Demon Hunters, princesses, and dinosaurs roaming between exhibits, collecting treats, and stopping by our booth to learn a little about conservation and sustainability along the way.
Our team had a wonderful time connecting with families, answering questions, and sharing critter stories. We’re always inspired by how curious and enthusiastic kids (and parents!) are about protecting species “at risk”, wildlife and the environment. Events like this remind us how small conversations can spark big changes.
Please take a moment to read our segment “Tips for a Sustainable Halloween.” It’s a lighthearted reminder that you can still enjoy all the spooky fun while being kind to the planet.
1. Reuse or Remix Your Costumes
Before heading to the store, check what you already have! Reuse last year’s costume, mix and match pieces from previous outfits. A few creative touches can turn an old costume into something completely new — and save money, too!
2. Get Crafty with Decorations
Skip the plastic and get creative with homemade décor. Use paper, cardboard, or natural items like pumpkins, leaves, pinecones, or twigs. You can even turn old jars into lanterns or ghosts by adding a coat of paint or some tissue paper — fun for kids and adults alike!
3. Choose Energy-Efficient Lighting
Those spooky glow effects don’t need to drain power. Switch to LED lights for your pumpkins, porches, and pathways. They last longer, use less energy, and shine just as bright — perfect for setting the mood without wasting electricity.
4. Use Every Part of the Pumpkin
Before you compost your jack-o’-lantern, make the most of it! Roast the seeds for a crunchy snack, use the pulp in pies or soups, and then compost what’s left. It’s a full-circle way to enjoy your pumpkin from start to finish.

5. Hand Out Treats with Less Waste
Opt for candy that comes in recyclable or paper-based packaging when possible, or buy in bulk to reduce individual wrappers. You can even hand out small non-candy items like pencils, stickers, or seed packets — a sweet surprise that lasts longer than chocolate!
6. Ditch the Disposable Bags
Instead of single-use plastic bags, use reusable totes, old pillowcases, or buckets for trick-or-treating. They’re sturdier, hold more candy, and can be reused year after year.
7. Support Local
Buy pumpkins, decorations, and treats from local farms and businesses whenever possible. Supporting local not only reduces transportation emissions but also strengthens your community.
8. Remind for Everyone Not to Litter While Trick-or-Treating
Encourage kids to hold onto their candy wrappers until they get home instead of dropping them on the ground. It’s a simple way to show respect for neighbours and wildlife — and helps keep the streets clean for everyone to enjoy. Parents can even bring a small bag to collect wrappers along the way to make it easy! By making a few thoughtful changes, you can enjoy a spooky, fun, and planet-friendly Halloween that’s good for you — and great for the Earth! 🌎👻
