Position Title: Environmental Biologist

Start Date & Duration: June 2026 (asap), 8-week contract
Rate: $18.00 per hour
Hours: 35 hrs per week
Requirements: Between age 15 and 30, Class G Driver’s licence, access to a vehicle, legally allowed to work in Canada

Role:
8Trees Inc. is seeking motivated and detail-oriented students or early career professionals to join our team as an Environmental Biologist. This role is ideal for individuals looking to gain hands-on field experience in environmental assessments, general ecology, conservation, and wildlife monitoring.
Field work will focus primarily on conducting standardized wildlife monitoring surveys across the Niagara Region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct reptile surveys at assigned locations in accordance with established protocols.
  • Identify and document all target species observations, including behaviour, habitat use, and location coordinates, in field notebooks.
  • Collect and record relevant environmental data, such as weather conditions, temperature, and habitat characteristics.
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and detailed field notes throughout all survey activities.
  • Enter field data into a shared digital database (e.g., Google Sheets) in a timely manner.
  • Complete repeated surveys at assigned sites throughout the field season.
  • Work collaboratively with a field partner during evening survey periods.
  • Maintain open communication with team leaders by responding promptly and professionally to calls, emails, and messages.

Qualifications:

  • Current or recent studies in biology, ecology, environmental science, herpetology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with amphibians, reptiles, or other wildlife in either field or academic settings.
  • Experience collecting field data and maintaining accurate, organized records.
  • Ability to identify common reptile species or a willingness to learn quickly.
  • Strong attention to detail, along with solid organizational skills.
  • Comfort working outdoors in variable weather conditions and during evening hours.

Additional Assets:

  • Familiarity with the Niagara Region and local wildlife species.
  • Experience using standardized survey protocols.

Working Conditions:

  • Fieldwork may take place during the day, evening, or night, depending on the survey type. For example, turtle nesting surveys are typically conducted in the evening, bat surveys at night, and snake surveys during the day while avoiding peak summer temperatures. Schedule flexibility is required.
  • All surveys require repeat visits to the same locations throughout the season.
  • Fieldwork schedules are weather-dependent and planned in advance using a shared Google Sheet or planner.
